Originally a harvest festival, Onam is also the state festival of Kerala and is celebrated as the home coming of the legendary Emperor Mahabali. It is also celebrated by Malayali diaspora around the world. The festival lasts 10 days with celebrations peaking from Uthradom (Onam Eve) to Thiruvonam (the main celebration) & Avvittom (the Third Onam Day). Onam celebrations include Vallam Kali (boat races), Pulikali (tiger dances), Pookkalam (flower arrangement), Onathappan (worship), Onam Kali (Tug of War), Thumbi Thullal (women's dance), Kummattikali (mask dance), Onathallu (martial arts), Onavillu (music), Kazhchakkula (plantain offerings), Onapottan (costumes), Atthachamayam (folk songs and dance), and the Onam sadya (nine course feast).
